How long does it really take to create or change for the better?
Is it true that you can create a new body, or new life in 21 days?
IS THIS REALLY, TRUE?
As a fitness professional, I have offered these programs like… “GIVE ME 21 DAYS… LOSE THE WEIGHT… GET THE BODY OF YOUR DREAMS”
Does this mean that I believe this to be true, or if I didn’t believe it to be true, why would I then offer this type of program….
Well let’s first go back to where, when and how this whole concept or idea really started. Then… we can get to whether it may be TRUE OR NOT…
The 21 day concept was first introduced in the ’70’s by a plastic surgeon, Dr. Maxwell Maltz. Maltz wrote a book, Psycho-Cybernetics, based on his clinical experience as a plastic surgeon.
Maltz’ found that the patients who were most disappointed with their results, were those that had predetermined an unrealized outcome. So Maltz worked with these patients, teaching them to visualize and create positive outcomes from their surgeries.
The positive realization of their thoughts, connecting their mind with their body transformation, took a minimum of 21 days.
The knowledge and experience Maltz gained in his practice, taught him to see the potential and practical application in turning around expectations, outside his practice of medicine.
As described by Wikipedia “The book defines the mind-body connection as the core in succeeding in attaining personal goals.”
His book opened the of door of possibilities, for anyone to turn around a “disappointing” life of unfulfilled goals in just 21 days.
In other words, if you are able to dedicate 21 days to visualize and connect with your desired outcome, your dream life can come true. Viola! The birth of the 21 days to change phenomenon.
Give us 21 days and all your dreams will come true,
Your life will be transformed into the life you always wanted in 21 days!
Okay so now we know the history of this concept or idea of transforming in 21 days…
Let’s be honest 21 days, 3 weeks … Whatcha got to lose other than maybe time, bodyfat or even your old self, RIGHT?!
So here we are desperate to do something, anything and the prospect of 21 days, Facebook, Instagram, Infomercials, at your gym…. is popping up all over the place…
Get at it! RIGHT NOW or guess what (according to the principle of change) ahh never mind… the feeling and motivation has passed.
The “principle of change” states that…(the)“longer time gap between intention and action, change is less likely to occur. So if you intend to do something, do it now. Quick. Before you talk yourself out of it or change your mind.” (as quoted by Eva Rykr)
What happens though if you don’t “change” in those 21 days, do you QUIT, are you a failure, is the program a failure?
What is it???
As Maltz’ book points out, “concentration on inner attitudes is essential to his approach, as a person’s outer success can never rise above the one visualized internally.”
Let’s say that again… “a person’s outer success can never rise above the one visualized internally”
Alright then, Let’s ask again, CAN YOU CHANGE IN 21 Days?
IS THIS TRUE?
On the surface, it would seem, based on the testimonies and the successful selling of these programs, YES...
However there are also unsuccessful stories that have been told as well, OR NO?!….
SO Which is it?
Maybe the questions need to be…
Do you Want; Or Are you Willing to make that happen in 21 days?
And then ask yourself…
Can you visualize your success in 21 days?
In other words if your “inner attitude” is still visualizing yourself as a failure, 21 days or even 21 years…it really doesn’t matter how much outer success you achieve….
Given what we know about the principles of change…
If I told you, it could be between 21 days to a YEAR or more to relearn how you visualize your successful “outer” life…Would you sign up for that “PROGRAM”?
So why would I or anyone else “claim” 21 days?
Remember we often lose interest if we don’t get started right now, and if RIGHT NOW means 21 days of right now… then that seems easy enough…
Unsuccessful or successful, the greatest success lies in…
What you Want and what are you Willing to do to get “life lasting change“; It means you need to address what you quantify as change.
Remember “outer success” can not outweigh what you “visualize” as your success.
Okay so let’s go there again… CAN YOU REALLY CHANGE IN 21 DAYS,
IS THIS TRUE?
As a total optimist and a person that knows ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE… It is all in what you believe to be true for yourself...
IF YOU CHOOSE TO BELIEVE YOU CAN CHANGE IN 21 DAYS… IF YOU ARE WILLING AND ABLE TO INTERNALLY EMBRACE CHANGE.. Then YES IT IS TRUE..
So this is how I see it based on my personal and professional experience
As the Serenity Prayer says… “Courage to change the things I can… Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace..that I may be reasonably happy in this life…”
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
forever in the next.

As a female entrepreneur and fitness professional, My own story has many ups and downs which started more than 33 years ago as a 12 year old bullied for her big butt. My 12 year old self started her own personal plan, started the fire and the uphill climb to overcome her imperfect self. The plot and the story thickened when my body gave out on me in my 20's diagnosed with fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism As a worn down just barely married woman, I needed to reclaim my youth through weight lifting and eating for me. It took those health issues to help me find my way back to rewrite my story. I use this journey and personal experiences of many ups and downs in health, to work right beside my clients to help them achieve their best self. Today I work right beside the women I meet to teach them that they do count and they do have a purpose.
